90th Exchange

KW Granite Club: March 16 – 18, 2007

On the committee with Ron Shane and Bob Mooney this year were: Ian Anderson, Les Houston, Bob MacMillan, Don Fanstone, Paul Sanford, Paul Sellner and Graham Wallbank.

The Kitchener half of the exchange started with a reception in Heidelberg Friday night. Saturday, they got down to some not-too-serious curling at the KW Granite Club, liberally interspersed with breaks for coffee, St. Patrick’s Day libations and lunch, and ending with dinner in Heidelberg.

Although no longer curling, longtime local members of the exchange such as Glen Stewart, Earl Schedewitz, Ed Bergman and Lorne Kuntz (now living in Ottawa) , were among the 55 men on hand for the event.

Sunday morning attendance at the “Sinners” breakfast is a must.

“It begins with a fine rendition of an old hymn by a choir of members, resplendent in crimson shirts,” said Ron . “A deacon of sorts recounts the sins of some of the gathering and imposes modest fines.”

The Detroit curlers headed home at noon with happy memories and the Curlers’ Toast ringing in their ears:

Then drain deep the cog till the brain is whirlin’

And pledge me ye lovers of Scotia ‘s ain game,

To the memory of him, the inventor of curlin’,

Though the mists of oblivion envelop his name.

90th Exchange

The KW Granite Club honours Joe Livermore

Joe Livermore is a long time member of the Exchange. For a number of years Joe was the organizer of the Detroit end of the exchange.

Joe has provided the excellent corned beef at the Friday evening reception in Detroit for years. He goes to the downtown Detroit market to a particular butcher to get the meat.

Joe is also a dedicated volunteer at the Sinner’s breakfasts in Detroit. For a long time Joe was the scrambled egg cook. He has passed that responsibility on, and now acts as overseer of the breakfast.

As a token of appreciation for his years of service to the exchange, Joe was presented with an honorary membership from the KW Granite Club at the Kitchener end of the 90th exchange.
This picture was taken later showing Joe holding the award at the Detroit Curling Club.
